The best way to butter me up 🥐
Happy National Croissant Day! I love carbs in all forms, but baked goods have a special place in my heart. That said, croissants are a food I can only fully enjoy alone, since it's impossible to eat one without looking like a sloppy goblin. They're so flaky and messy that two bites in you'll find me covered in crumbs, my fingers greasy with butter. They might be tasty, but they're not the most dignified snack. How do those fancy Parisians do it and manage to still look so chic? Tell me your secrets!
Good news and bad news 😬
Here at Boredwalk we're not ones to sugarcoat things... unless those things are a moist gooey delicious chocolate cake. Maybe you can't count on the future being any better, but at least there's cake, which won't make things worse.
🤢 This email stinks! Better open it to find out why...
If you're one of those folks who has already dispensed with your Dry January scheme, you're in luck — today is National Irish Coffee Day! My own Dry January is (as of this typing) still going strong. I remain undecided as to whether I will continue being un-moist past January 31st. I probably should, but really the ball is in existence's court. Be less crappy and we'll talk!
✍️ Take note!
My penmanship has always been kind of a disgrace and at this point my handwriting muscles cramp after a few sentences, but I think we can all agree it's a necessary skill. The last thing you want is to be stranded on a deserted island with no ability to scrawl an SOS in the sand.
Might as well face it...🫠
Today's occasion is all about accepting things as they are. The originator of Day of Acceptance came up with the idea to honor Annie Hopkins, an activist who aimed to "make the world a better place by educating people about the importance of embracing diversity." Hopkins wanted to increase social acceptance of disability and encourage the world come together to support and embrace the challenges that come along with having a disability.
🤓 What's another word for...
Today marks the birthday of Peter Mark Roget, the author of Roget’s Thesaurus. Roget retired from his medical career in 1840 and spent the rest of his life working on creating his thesaurus, which he published in 1852. What a slacker; I wonder if Roget struggled with Impostor Syndrome, too.
How did I get here? 🤔
I am the totally secular type* (as you can see from the art above), but thankful to live in a part of the world where you are free to believe in reincarnation, deities, or even pasta if you like. Societies that protect religious freedom are more likely to experience a surge in economic and social development, so there's personal and societal benefits to live and let live when it comes to faith.
🦝 A new era is upon us!
Sick of self-improvement? I don't blame you! If reality isn't gonna get any better why should we? Embrace your inner villain, my friend. What has being a hero ever done for you? Today is the day; carpe diem!
Thank you for... 🤗
Saying "thank you" is a very time honored tradition. The Oxford English Dictionary claims the word "thank" came from the word "think" around 450AD. Before it existed people would say "I think of you kindly" to express appreciation. The expression eventually became "I thank you" and later "thank you" around the 14th century. It was later shortened to "thanks" in the 18th century.
🤓 You say "word nerd" like it's a bad thing...
Happy National Word Nerd Day! Being an incorrigible grammarian isn't for everybody, but IYKYK, right? The world offers many joys, but in my experience they are fleeting and few and far between. One of mine is working as many different words into my everyday speech as possible.
Time to disappoint someone! 😞
Nearly a full week into 2023 and I'm back on my bullsh!t already, and by that I mean second guessing my decision-making, imagining ways I will fail someone, and so on. Every time I sit down to write an email or Tweet, or release a new product, I can't help but imagine what unprovoked wrath from a stranger my latest offering might inspire. Does this sound like a villain origin story? I think this is how I end up in my villain era. Stay tuned!
😵 You're getting very sleepy...
Today is also National Trivia Day, so here's some quick trivia about hypnosis!
1. The origin of hypnosis in the Western world goes back to 1770, which is when German physician Franz Mesmer started using it on patients in Vienna and Paris, when other medical practitioners took an interest they started call it "mesmerism"
