Why was Moby Dick so angry all the time? 🐳
HIS COUSIN FUDGY GOT ALL THE GIRLS
Happy National Fudge Day! Fun fact: fudge is actually a happy accident that was created thanks to a batch of messed up caramel. How serendipitous! As much as I love caramel, I feel like I've aged out of regular caramel consumption thanks to the proliferation of these pesky dental fillings and crowns. So fudge is a welcome alternative!
Stephen Colbert with some sage advice for today
Before we get to some funny links, let's celebrate a few June 16th birthdays!
- Prominent Apache leader and medicine man Geronimo, born this day in 1829! Geronimo was from the Bedonkohe band of the Apache tribe and led numerous raids against both Mexican and US forces that were encroaching on Apache lands in the southwest from the late 1840s through the late 1880s.
- Comic actor Stan Laurel, born this day in 1890! Mr. Laurel was one half of the legendary comedic duo Laurel & Hardy from 1927 until Hardy's death in 1957.
- Emmy and Tony Award winning actress Laurie Metcalf, born this day in 1955! Ms. Metcalf's most widely known role was as Aunt Jackie Harris on the sitcoms Roseanne and The Conners.
- Hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, born this day in 1971! From stage to screen to recording studio, Mr. Shakur established himself as a leading voice describing the contemporary social issues plaguing inner cities, and as a symbol of activism against inequality.
- Finally, actor John Cho, born this day in 1972! Mr. Cho first started acting in the 1990s, but he gained fame thanks to his role as Harold Lee in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, and as the successor to George Takei as Hikaru Sulu in the recent cinematic reboot of the Star Trek film franchise.
Alright, let's get to some amusing links!
1. The occult origins of the dunce cap.
Despite its reputation as a symbol of stupidity, the dunce cap was actually conceived of by metaphysical thinker John Duns Scotus as a way to amplify knowledge. Wild!
2. Automation is coming for your jobs, pizza purveyors!
Few things in life fill me with as much joy as Rube Goldberg machines; convoluted mechanical contraptions designed to do mundane things. Check out this machine that wildly overcomplicates pizza making! It even feeds you (poorly) once the pie is made!
3. Tired: Kissing Booths. Wired: Hissing Booths.
I don't know about you, but I would be much more inclined to make a charitable donation to an angry feline than a strange human getting in my personal space with their bodily fluids.
4. All aboard the propane train!
This propane purveyor gets creative with their light box sign with new punny messages weekly. There are so many good ones, but I'm partial to "if attacked by a mob of clowns, go for the juggler."
5. Comedian Trey Kennedy would like to show you his mom's home decor.
Actually, he would like to show you ALL moms' home decor.
Did Home Goods throw up all over this apartment? Yes. Does Trey manage to make this platitude vomit hilarious? Also yes.
Boredwalk Community: News flash! Other people exist!
1. What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?
My day job is to work on my YA novel about a high schooler punk rock girl who falls madly in love with a female jock classmate (unpaid — I'm on Disability but trying to make the most of it). When I was still able to work, I wrote copy for various websites, from travel sites to Pottery Barn. To that I say, "eh".
Dream day job? Play pro basketball.
2. What's your biggest pet peeve?
People who are oblivious of others. News flash! Other people exist!
3. What's a book you think the Boredwalk community should read?
Everything J.D. Salinger ever wrote. The Passion by Jeanette Winterson. Native Son by Richard Wright. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Everything Toni Morrison ever wrote. (I could go on and on.)
4. What's the most useful piece of advice you've ever received?
I have the right to take up space (many women don't feel like they
can), make my voice heard, and set boundaries.
5. What experience do you most want to cross off your bucket list?
Visit Jigokudani Monkey Park!
6. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
Super strength and the ability to heal my own body. I guess because chronic pain sucks and I'd love to have power over it.
7. You can curse your nemesis with a minor annoyance for eternity; what do you choose?
The curse of losing things constantly. "Where the f*%k are my glasses? My keys? My purse/bag?"
8. Where can the rest of the Boredwalk community find you?
FB under my name. I'm pretty private, though.
...IT'S USUALLY BECAUSE THEY'VE GOT THEIR HEAD IN THE CLOUDS.
Happy National Reach as High as You Can Day! If you're pint sized like me you may assume this day is about mocking those of us at lower elevations, but apparently it's meant to reference the metaphorical reaching for things like hopes and dreams. That kind of reach is accessible to us all in theory, unlike the items in my kitchen cabinets, which I am forced to bat down with barbecue tongs and spatulas and the like.
A reenactment of me trying to get anything down from a high shelf in my house.
Today is also National Dolphin Day, National Ex-Spouse Day, and Look Up at the Sky Day. Do with that information what you will.
I will do nothing with that information and continue to be bitter that the height gods never smiled upon me, although Matt will be quick to point out that neither did the concussion gods, since hitting my head on things is a near non-existent problem down here.
What else happened today in history?
• The first edition of Noah Webster's dictionary was published on this day in 1828. Helping us all reach new heights in terms of our vernacular!
• On this day in 2003 The Human Genome Project completed a mapping the genes of the human genome, a project which started in 1990. Scientific heights, y'all!
• Several birthdays also happened today, including Sarah Michelle Gellar (famous for her role as Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Anthony Michael Hall (famous for a long acting career including iconic geek roles in films like Sixteen Candles and iconic jerk roles in Edward Scissorhands. Good on him for not being typecast). Today is also the birthday of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator/star Rob McElhenney and Helen Keller's lifelong companion/teacher/Miracle Worker Anne Sullivan.
Alright, since it's Wednesday, I suppose it's time to entertain you with some finds from around the web...
1. Women posting wins of all shapes and sizes.
This Instagram account is dedicated to sharing wins for women, both modern and historical. Whether it's rocking femmes showing up haters who doubt their heavy metal fandom, or heroines of the past helping enterprising women dispatch abusive husbands, this account is full of interesting history and modern victories.
2. Ursine intruder immediately regrets his transgression, thanks to some plucky pups.
This episode took place in Pasadena, CA, the town where Matt and I reside with our ancient feline familiar. I doubt Oliver the cat would have mustered the chutzpah on display with these two tiny dogs chasing a wayward bear from their home; he's really only good for making sure rodents rue the day they breach our abode.
3. Japan wants you to ski their slopes with some feathery friends.
Sure it's trick photography and not well-trained ostrich Olympians, but this little video of ostriches soaking up a snow day is still a fun watch.
4. Prolific Pen Comics are the perfect amusing distractions.
If funny comic strips sound like a delightful diversion between Zoom calls today, check out Yanni Davros' Insta account, fully of quick LOLs to brighten your day.
5. This theater in Portland never stopped doing the Time Warp.
This truly dedicated projectionist has been playing Rocky Horror Picture Show in an empty theater for 54 weeks! I guess he didn't want to break the streak for Portland's longest-running movie.
I still remember RHPS being the only semblance of something remotely alternative in the endless landscape of strip malls and gated communities where I spent my high school years. Thanks for the little slice of nostalgia, Oregonian, and thanks to the universe's reach-as-high-as-you-can powers that be for helping me escape that bland little corner of the hellscape.
Boredwalk Community: Librarian by Day, Wedding Officiant by Night
1. What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?
I'm a children's librarian in a public library outside the Pittsburgh, PA area (actually, the public library I grew up GOING to!) and it IS my dream day job! I've been here since 2002.
2. What's a book you think the Boredwalk community should read?
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. It provides a thought-provoking look at all the "what if's" we ask ourselves...what if we took that job, married that guy...how would our lives be different? It does dive a bit into mental illness, but overall, it'll make you think about your "what if's."
3. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
Oh, if I could travel anywhere, tube travel, like The Jetsons! My son and his family just moved to Australia, and I'd love to pop on over and HUG THEM and check out where they live, and see koalas and kangaroos up close!
4. Clear up a misconception (about your job, where you are from, some other topic you know a lot about).
Misconception: Librarians get paid to sit and read all day. Our jobs are GREAT, but we don't just sit and read all day! Go check out your public library and borrow some excellent free stuff!
5. What experience do you most want to cross off your bucket list?
I've been hot-air ballooning, but my hubby has not. It's on the plan for later this summer we hope (and that trip to Australia, as soon as the countries all like each other again)!
6. What is a surprising fact about you?
Fun fact about me? I officiate weddings on the side! In the state of Pennsylvania you can "self-unite," an old law from back in the QUAKER days, so my hubby and I actually officiated our own wedding and had our guests pronounce us to be husband and wife!
(Ed. note: that is VERY cool! Now if only I could by a bottle of wine before noon on Sundays next time I'm in PA...)
7. Where can the rest of the Boredwalk community find you?
This is my work FB page. When I'm not there I can often be found reading in a rocking chair or taking long walks with my husband.
...BUT A BEAR ON BEER IS A BEER ENGINEER! 🍻
Happy National Beer Day! If you partake, I hope you're able to enjoy a pint of your favorite lager, pilsner, ale, or stout today. And if you don't, that's cool, too! My favorite nonalcoholic beverage is seltzer water, because I happen to believe that bubbles elevate most drinking experiences.
Why is National Beer Day observed on April 7th? Because that's the anniversary of the Cullen-Harrison Act being signed into law in 1933, reversing the ill-conceived prohibition of alcohol sales in the United States. After water and tea, beer is the most popular beverage on the planet, with over 35 billion gallons produced annually worldwide.

So many famous birthday boys/girls/persons today! They are as follows:
Musicians: Eleanora "Billie Holiday" Fagan (1915) and Ravi Shankar (1920)
Politicians: Successful former California governor and failed former presidential candidate Jerry Brown (1938)
Actors/Filmmakers: Francis Ford Coppola (1939), Jackie Chan (1954), and Russell Crowe (1964)
OK, OK...you've waited long enough. It's link time!
1. Get excited to take on the day with some high energy break dancing!
Fun fact: Meredith used to be a b-girl, and when we met she had just recovered from a recent wrist injury from dancing like this!
2. Parenthood is a tough racket, no matter the species.
I know that the term "herding cats" is a popular one, but after this video of a stressed out mama bear struggling to get her cubs across the street, maybe we should change it to "herding bears"?
3. Normally I like to keep religion out of Boredwalk emails...
...but I will happily make an exception for the good folks at Clackamas United Church of Christ in Oregon. Delightful! Also, to our Jewish friends, we wish you peace today on Yom Hashoah.
4. And if your spiritual path is a bit more pagan and earthy...
...please enjoy the fairytale photography of artist Katerina Plotnikova!
She was recently a guest on the Awarepreneurs podcast to talk about Boredwalk's somewhat contrarian view of the world, and it's actually a pretty cool synopsis of what Boredwalk does, how we started, our company culture, and the sort of impact we're trying to have on the world around us. So if you're at all interested in Boredwalk be sure to check it out!
Boredwalk Community: "Listen Not to Respond, but to Understand"
1. What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?
My actual day job is a RN in an ICU. It's been a really stressful last 12 months being frontline with Covid.
If we were dreaming I would be living in a camper, home schooling my children, doing those work-to-camp arrangements all over the country.
(Ed. note: I bet! Thank you for your service. I hope you and all of your nursing colleagues get some rest soon.)
2. What's your biggest pet peeve?
Ugh! When people lie! Liars are the absolute f*%^*!< worst!!!
3. What's the most useful piece of advice you've ever received?
"Listen not to respond, but to understand." (That's a really good one for all of us to remember.)
4. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
Invisibility. I think it would be amazing to 1. sneak up on people and pretend to be a ghost, and 2. so I can hear who talks that shit!
5. You can curse your nemesis with a minor annoyance for eternity; what do you choose?
Excessive salivation to the point of drooling uncontrollably. (Aggressively annoying but fairly innocuous. I like it!)
6. What experience do you most want to cross off your bucket list?
...I don't really have a bucket list. But I want to scuba dive one day. I want to visit Australia. I want to backpack through Europe...a lot of travel. 🌎
7. What is a surprising fact about you?
I can independently wiggle my pinkie toes.. go ahead try it — bet ya $5 you can't.
8. Where can the rest of the Boredwalk community find you?

Boredwalk Community: I'm Almost 40 and I Hate Wearing Pants
1. What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?
I help cultivate cannabis in Arizona.
My dream job, I would have to say High Priestess in a Cannabis Cult. We would live in an estate-sized commune. We would have cook outs, grow cannabis, and people would give me money to hear my philosophy on how everything is meaningless and it would be better to do drugs about it.
2. What's your biggest pet peeve?
Slowness.
3. What's the most useful piece of advice you've ever received?
Always keep a good flashlight, like a mag light. You can whack someone over the head with it, and find things easier in low lighting. They're way more useful than people give them credit for.
4. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
I would want to be invisible. I could avoid my weird neighbors. They like to have conversations at me, and quite randomly. Sometimes when I take out my trash, there is this super old dude and he comes out of his house to tell me he took care of the weeds in my yard. I think it's nice, I'd just like it a whole lot better if I could make it to the dumpster holding a heavy bag of used kitty litter without having to smile and nod for 10 minutes at the super chatty dude. If I was invisible I could just take my trash out and then go back to my house where I could take my pants back off. I hate wearing pants.
5. You can curse your nemesis with a minor annoyance for eternity; what do you choose?
I would curse her with a loose booty hole. Like if she sneezes, or laughs too hard she'd do a little "wet surprise fart."
Not like full-on shits her pants or anything — just enough for a little too much booty juice to come out. That way she's mildly uncomfortable and would like to find a restroom to fix the inconvenience as it drys and gets itchy. Also that would run up her laundry bill. She'd probably get wicked skidmarks and have to go through tons of extra underpants.
Ladies underpants can be expensive. Some ladies have to buy the bougie organic cotton kind, or else they're going to have a stanky lady garden.
6. What experience do you most want to cross off your bucket list?
Paying off my student loans.
7. If you drink: what's your go-to drink? If you don't drink: what's your go-to dessert or snack?
I started drinking anything chardonnay because it's the lowest carb count. I'm on keto and it sucks, but the Dollar General across the street doesn't judge me when I pay $3.08 in laundry quarters and loose change, so that's my go-to drink.
I only drink when my coworkers make me want to wander off into the desert and shoot myself.
8. What's a surprising fact about you?
People think I'm a barely mentally functioning adult, when in fact I'm almost 40 and I hate wearing pants.
9. Where can the rest of the Boredwalk community find you?
I'm on instagram at @ghost.with.a.hoop
And I make an ungodly amount of playlists on Soundcloud.
...HAVE BEEN SANDWICHES.
Happy National Cheesesteak Day! After the day I had yesterday, a hot & melty plant-based cheesesteak would sure hit the spot today. My favorite form of this sandwich, the Filly Cheese Phake, hails from Liquid Earth in Baltimore, Maryland. Reply to this and tell me about your favorite cheesesteak experience!
We would be remiss in celebrating cheesesteaks if we didn't also celebrate National Ag(riculture) Day, which recognizes the contributions of agriculture to our plates and even our wardrobes (thanks, Big Cotton!)
Today is also National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day. Do with this information what you will. I, for one, will pretend it — and raisins in general — do not exist.

1. The perfect response from those of us who prefer non-human children.
Thomas Benjamin Wild, Esq. really makes that ukulele wail...almost as much as my neighbors' kids.
2. A puppy playing with a butterfly? SOLD!
I mean, that pretty much says it all. Whenever I see scenarios like this I always come away from the video thinking "now THAT guy has it all figured out." And by "that guy" I mean this tiny dog. Or the butterfly. They're both way smarter than I am.
3. 25 inventions that you may not have known were created (or dramatically improved upon) by women.

5. Wait — Legos, ASMR, stop-motion animation, and baking all rolled into one mesmerizing video?
YouTuber tomosteen is onto some next-level sh!t here. Oh, well. At least you have something fun to watch while you nosh on that cheesesteak!
ALL THIS TALK OF BAGGED LUNCHES AND SALADS IS MAKING ME HANGRY
Happy National Pack Your Lunch Day! And National Landline Telephone Day! And National Ranch Day!
Yeesh, what a bunch of lame lesser holidays. Some days give us genuinely fun things to celebrate, and some days we get celebrations of brown paper bags, outdated technology, and gross condiments. *shrug* Better luck next Wednesday, I guess. (If you have a crystal ball handy and know what next Wednesday's holiday is, that last sentence is pretty funny. One might even think it's...charming.)

1. Ooh, an ethical small business throwing shade at Amazon? Sign me up!
Peak Design spent years developing their sling satchel, only to have Amazon do what it does and rip it off using subpar materials and (let's face it) shady labor practices. This was Peak Designs' humorous takedown, and I loved every second of it!
2. Wait, there's MORE Amazon shade to be had? Lemme get some popcorn...
OK, this is VERY funny, and in no small part because 'Tristan' is played by the very funny standup comic Matt Broussard, who also came up with the idea for this video and wrote the script. Matt once showed me his pun journal after a show, and I'll be honest — before that experience I thought I was pretty creative with visual wordplay, but Matt is operating on an entirely different level. I wonder if he still has that battered old composition book...
3. J-Dog is an 88 year old grandma who is thirsty AF and not being shy about it on TikTok.

4. Grandpas are feeling frisky on TikTok, too!
Check out this grizzled hype beast putting all the young bucks to shame with his style game!

HAPPINESS & LOLz
Happy National I Want You To Be Happy Day! (Jeez, what a mouthful!) Seriously, though — it's true. That's why I scour the internet for fun links to share with you on Wednesdays! Fleeting though it may be, here's hoping this email can be a (small) oasis to distract you from the aggravations of life.
Sure, the more cynical reader might say "if you really wanted me to be happy there'd be a 90% discount code in this email," but the Wednesday Boredwalk email isn't that kind of email.
To which the cynic might reply "if your logo is at the top of it, it's that kind of email."
To which I would say "that's a great point! What a missed opportunity this was! I'm a pretty disappointing marketer, hehehe! *sheepish self-effacing shrug* Let's move on from this embarrassing foible and eat some nonexistent birthday cake!"

Today's famous birthday boys/girls/persons/geo-political areas are as follows:
• The great state of Florida, admitted as the 27th in the Union on this day in 1845! This is the first time I've ever really looked at it, but Florida has a pretty nice state flag. Not as cool as California's, of course, but that's because we have that sweet bear on ours. Put a manatee, gator, or panther on there and we'll talk, Florida! I'm sure the Seminole woman on the current Seal of Florida would much rather commune with the local fauna than watch the USS Oppression cruise into port.
• Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, born this day in 1840! Chief Joseph led his tribe on a 1,170-mile "fighting retreat" against the U.S. Army in 1877 as they tried to seek political asylum in Canada following clashes with white settlers in Idaho resulting from the Nez Perce's forced relocation there. His principled leadership and the tribe's conduct during the ordeal earned them admiration from all corners, including those pursuing them, and led to Chief Joseph becoming renowned as a humanitarian and peacemaker until his passing in 1904.
• Scientist, inventor, and engineer Alexander Graham Bell, born this day in 1847! Mr. Bell is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone. Yay! He is also the co-founder of the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). Boo!
• Public radio personality Ira Jeffrey Glass, born this day in 1959! Vogue magazine once described Mr. Glass as "the aural embodiment of Sensitive Guy Who Is Friends with All the Girls™." Sounds unthreateningly dreamy!
OK, OK...you've waited long enough. It's link time!
1. Want to eat like an orc and drink like a high elf dandy? I do!
Heroes' Feast is a new Dungeons & Dragons-themed cookbook, full of recipes for things like Elven Bread, Drow Mushroom Steaks, and Trolltide Candied Apples, but I'll be honest — they had me at the gin-based Potion of Restoration.
2. LEGO is getting all grown up with these new sets!
LEGO's new Botanical Collection is designed with adults in mind, with both a floral arrangement set and a bonsai set containing pieces formed entirely of plant-based bioplastics. Seems like the ideal sort of thing for brown thumbs who still want to calm down and indulge in some plant care!
3. Cartoonist Joseph Nowak draws funny and bizarre single-panel comics!
From puns about rooster foodie slang to jokes about Helen of Troy's pet preferences, this is a treasure trove of visual humor.
4. For a brief six-episode run, Satan was a star.
Apparently in 1978 RIA — Italy's national television network — produced and aired six episodes of a variety program centered on the Dark Lord himself, Lucifer-f**king-Morningstar. Called Stryx, the show featured musical performances by disco and avant-pop star Grace Jones, Italian David Bowie analog Patty Pravo, and others, usually being carried around on plush lounges by people dressed as goblins. Netflix could be giving the people what they want — a decadent, sexually ambiguous, and Satanic version of Soul Train — yet here we are with another tranche of dowdy British period dramas. Terrible!
From the basics of photosynthesis to the explanation of geological time scales using funny dinosaur doodles, this is a great way to get kids (and cooler adults) excited about science AND art.
Boredwalk Community: Slicing Cake With Dental Floss
1. What's your actual day job and what's your dream day job?
I'm a mixed media artist with a home studio and a stay-at-home mom of a 5 year old in distance learning kindergarten, as well as a 2 year old.
I adore my kids, but my dream job would be to make artwork all day long in a massive warehouse that we get to professionally build out into an absolute dream art studio that has areas for ceramics, photography, sewing, resin, film making, painting, welding, glass work, etc., etc., so I could mix all those things together and make amazing multidisciplinary mixed media work with a community of other artists and makers.
I know it's possible. Who's in?
2. What's your biggest pet peeve?
One of my pet peeves is when people say "you're so talented" to an artist (of any kind) because 'talent' is really just a small part of the picture and doesn't speak to what it really takes to do anything well, which is a lot of dedication, hard work, and time learning one's craft.
All that being said, I do still appreciate it a lot when someone tells me I'm talented because I know that what they truly mean by it is that they love my work, and I appreciate that so much! 💜
3. What's a life pro tip the Boredwalk community needs to know?
My biggest tip is to stay curious (but responsibly watch your back), travel when you can to expose yourself to other people and cultures, and always keep some dental floss in your bag because it can be used for so many things, from sewing a patch on your jacket to slicing cake, and you never know when you may need to slice some cake!
4. If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
The ability to solve, fund, and implement every positive change our world needs right now.
And, it would be pretty cool to fly.
5. You can curse your nemesis with a minor annoyance for eternity; what do you choose?
You know that stitched line on socks that goes across your toes? I'd curse them to have a tiny bit of that stitch line lay right across the outside of their pinky toes so it rubs against the sides of their shoes forever.
It's terrible.
I know.
6. What experience do you most want to cross off your bucket list?
I'd like to travel around the world with my husband and kiddos, visiting all our friends and taking trains everywhere we can because my 5 year old is obsessed with trains so we're a train family now.
7. What is a surprising fact about you?
I'm the only redhead in my family out of my 5 siblings, my parents, 4 aunts and uncles, 8 cousins, and 23 nieces and nephews. But my grandfather and most of his brothers and sisters had red hair, and one out of my 6 great-nieces and great-nephews has red hair, too.
Also, I used to be a bike messenger in NYC and made a documentary short in 2004 about bike messenger women in NYC. It's called "Even the Girls" and you can find it on YouTube.
8. Where can the rest of the Boredwalk community find you?
Offline you can find me in my Southern California home art studio painting or stitching some artwork with my sewing machine.
